When It's Time To Say Good-Bye To A Faithful Appliance
During the last six months my 1982 vintage dryer has showed signs of "begging for mercy".
Purchased in Salem, New Hampshire 31 years ago, it's no secret, I've been very proud of my 1982 vintage washer and dryer pair.
In fact, I've actually boasted to neighbors, friends and anyone who would listen, that my MAYTAG'S have never ever had a service call in my 31 years of ownership! So, this past week, I was somewhat reluctant to admit that the time had finally come to say good-bye to my dryer. No doubt it has served me well through the years and I am truly thankful for its excellent service.
So, yes, I purchased a new MAYTAG dryer. My new dryer arrived on Friday afternoon and believe it or not, I've had fun drying loads of laundry all weekend! Since I am very much an outdoors person, and not someone who relishes the thought of doing laundry or housework, I never thought I'd live to hear myself say that I enjoyed doing laundry this weekend!
WOW! The new machine is quiet! It's pretty! It's digital! It has tons of settings! And, it works really FAST. On Saturday morning I washed AND Dried four loads of laundry in less than 3 hours! The new machine has tons of "bells and whistles" too... like a "Sanitize" setting that supposedly takes dust mites or germs out of a load of laundry. Imagine that!
My new dryer is such a great appliance, I suspect that I'll regret not getting the matching washer to go with my new dryer....but...the truth is... my old 1982 vintage washer still works great!
The first symptom that my dryer was giving up and growing tired of life was the timer. It just stopped working one day. I'd set the timer for 60 minutes, leave the house to show property, and twelve hours later, I'd return to find the dryer still working. The load would be dry, but the dryer was still working. I decided that was a problem I could live with and ignored the early on-set symptoms.
One day last summer my dryer developed a "gut wrenching" sound that wouldn't stop. It was worse than nails-on-a-chalkboard! It was painful to listen to. My true-blue Maytag was loosing it's dependability. Worse, I was afraid to leave the house when the dryer was running. I was increasingly worried that it would cause a fire. Eventually, the "gut-wrenching" sound lead to "banging". This lead to a "wet-dryer" syndrome where the dryer, it's contents and even the lint filter would be wet for hours before the dryer was able to dry the load. You could feel the wet humidity when you opened the door.
Perhaps worst of all and the final determining factor -- I was loosing sleep over my dryer! During the "good old days", since my laundry room is situated outside my master bedroom, I used to love to fall asleep at night to the soothing "white noise" of a load of laundry in my dryer. Suddenly, I couldn't sleep at night with or without the dryer working. I had become addicted and dependent to falling asleep with my dryer working and now I couldn't sleep to the noises my dryer was making.
So last week, I purchased a new MAYTAG Bravos dryer. It was delivered on Friday afternoon. During the weekend, I was able to do everything on my "to-do" list, including laundry. I no longer had to worry about my dryer causing a house-fire. And I finally have had three nights of deep deep REM sleep! Good bye to my good and faithful 1982 vintage Maytag servant and thank you for 31 years of excellent service. Welcome New 2013 Maytag Bravos!
